Richard Mille Turns Per Day: A comprehensive TPD guide by model and reference

Richard Mille is one of the most exclusive watch manufacturers in the world. Its in-house calibers — developed in partnership with Formula 1 and aerospace equipment suppliers — have very specific winding requirements, quite different from traditional Swiss calibers. Most automatic Richard Mille models operate at 741 TPD in bidirectional rotation, a precise value that reflects the particular engineering of their movements.

To choose the right winder for your Richard Mille, consult our complete collection of automatic watch winders.

Understanding Richard Mille TPD

Unlike most manufacturers who recommend broad ranges (650–900 TPD), Richard Mille specifies a precise value: 741 TPD for almost all of its automatic calibers. This precision is characteristic of the brand's engineering approach — every parameter is optimized down to the last detail.

The only notable exception is the RM007-1 caliber (ladies watch), which goes down to 395 TPD — its smaller mainspring capacity requires fewer turns per day to stay fully wound.

The direction of rotation is bidirectional for all listed models.

TPD table by Richard Mille model

Model Caliber Direction of rotation TPD
RM 005 Felipe Massa Skeletonized Automatic RM005-S Bidirectional 741
RM 007 Ladies Watch RM007-1 Bidirectional 395
RM 010 Skeletonized Automatic RM005-S Bidirectional 741
RM 011 Felipe Massa Skeletonized Automatic RM011-S Bidirectional 741
RM 016 Skeletonized Automatic RM005-S Bidirectional 741
RM 023 Automatic RM023 Bidirectional 741
RM 028 Diver's Watch RMAS7 Bidirectional 741

Recommended setting for unlisted models

Richard Mille produces many limited edition references for which TPD data is not always officially published. For all Richard Mille automatic calibers not listed in this table, apply the following setting:

741 TPD bidirectional — this is the manufacturer's standard value for all of its in-house automatic calibers. If your watch is a ladies' piece, reduce to 395 TPD bidirectional.

If in doubt, contact Richard Mille after-sales service or an authorized dealer directly for the exact specifications of your caliber.

Which winder to choose for your Richard Mille?

A Richard Mille is one of the most precious watches there is — some references exceed one million euros. The winder that houses it must live up to this investment: silent motorization, electromagnetic shielding, precise TPD setting at 741, and optimal physical protection.

For 1 to 2 watches. The Heritage, President, Chancellor and Ambassador ranges start with 2 slots with precise TPD setting and silent motorization.

For collections with maximum security requirements. The Bellagio™, Bellagio Pro™ and Bellagio Max™ winder safes combine precise winding, biometric lock and integrated alarm — the obvious solution to protect pieces of this value.

For absolute demand. The Vauban™: 12 slots, solid steel structure, total vibration isolation, integrated jewelry drawers. A level of protection worthy of the world's most precious watches.

Frequently asked questions about Richard Mille TPD

Why does Richard Mille specify 741 TPD and not 650 or 800?

741 TPD is the value calculated by Richard Mille engineers to optimize the winding cycle of their in-house calibers without over-stressing the disengagement mechanism. It is a value derived from the precision engineering that characterizes the brand — even the number of turns per day is optimized down to the last detail.

My winder does not allow me to set exactly 741 TPD — what should I do?

If your winder offers fixed increments, choose the closest value from below — usually 700 or 720 TPD. Avoid exceeding 741 TPD to avoid over-stressing the disengagement mechanism. A winder with continuous TPD adjustment or small increments is ideal for Richard Mille calibers.

Does the RM 007 Ladies really only need 395 TPD?

Yes. The RM007-1 caliber is a small movement designed for ladies' cases — its smaller mainspring capacity reaches full charge with far fewer rotations. Using 741 TPD on this caliber would unnecessarily stress the disengagement mechanism constantly.
